Tenafly’s public school district earns an A+ from Niche and ranks #3 among all school districts in the state. With six schools serving about 3,500 students at a 13:1 student-teacher ratio, the numbers are hard to argue with: 75% math proficiency and 80% reading proficiency, both well above state averages.
Tenafly High School is ranked #17 among all public high schools in New Jersey, with average SAT scores of 1400, a 98% graduation rate, and 23 AP courses with an 82% pass rate. The school earned a National Blue Ribbon School Award in 2005, the only high school in the state to receive it that year. The middle school ranks #12 in New Jersey, and all elementary schools carry A+ Niche ratings in the state’s top 30.
From kindergarten through graduation, Tenafly delivers one of the strongest public school experiences in the Northeast.
2. 400 Acres of Protected Nature on the Palisades
The Tenafly Nature Center is the borough’s quiet advantage, and most of Bergen County has no idea it exists. Nearly 400 acres of protected woodland sit atop the Palisades, with over seven miles of hiking trails, Pfister’s Pond, streams, and habitat for 50+ nesting bird species, 23 mammal species, and 24 amphibian and reptile species.
The center runs programming all year: maple sugaring, bird walks, cidering, summer camps, and a Faerie Trail that kids love. It teaches over 30,000 people annually and has been a member-supported nonprofit since 1961. For families, this isn’t a park you drive to on weekends. It’s in your backyard, trails open from dawn to dusk, 365 days a year.
3. A Walkable Downtown With Real Character
Tenafly’s downtown, centered around Jay Street, County Road, and West Railroad Avenue, is what every suburb wishes it had. It’s a genuine, walkable commercial district with no chain stores: independent boutiques, outdoor cafes, restaurants, specialty food shops, and salons.
You’ll find contemporary Greek at Axia Taverna, Indian BYOB at Veda, kosher Mediterranean at Tavlin, and burgers at Mel’s Butcher Box, all within a few blocks of each other. The historic Tenafly train station has been converted into Cafe Angelique, a neighborhood coffee spot. There’s a luxury consignment shop (MiNT), a sustainable clothing boutique (Ave Lume), and the kind of street life that makes running errands feel like a neighborhood stroll. It’s only seven miles from Manhattan, but it feels like its own world.
4. An 11-Minute Drive to the George Washington Bridge
Tenafly sits about eight miles from the GWB, roughly 11 minutes by car under normal conditions. NJ Transit Bus 166 runs from Tenafly to the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan, with express service via I-95 taking about 54 minutes. The bus also connects to the GW Bridge Bus Station in Washington Heights for downtown Manhattan access via the A train.
For a town with this caliber of schools, nature access, and downtown, having a sub-hour express bus to Midtown is a rare combination. Many of Tenafly’s residents work in the city and chose the borough specifically because the commute doesn’t require compromising on quality of life.
5. An Affluent, Diverse Community With Deep Roots
Tenafly attracts high-achieving families from across cultures, and the numbers show it. The median household income is about $208,000. Nearly 78% of adults hold at least a bachelor’s degree, with over 41% holding a master’s or doctorate. The homeownership rate is 72%.
The borough is roughly 58% White and 31% Asian, with a well-established Korean-American community that has shaped the town’s cultural fabric, visible in its restaurants, businesses, and civic life. The poverty rate sits at just 3.5%. This is a community where families invest in education, maintain their properties, and stay for the long haul. Elizabeth Cady Stanton lived here from 1868 to 1887; Yogi Berra made it home. That kind of staying power says something about what Tenafly offers.
Where to Eat in Tenafly
Tenafly’s downtown dining scene punches well above what you would expect from a suburb of 15,000. The stretch along Jay Street, West Railroad Avenue, and County Road is home to a contemporary Greek restaurant reviewed by the New York Times, a kosher Mediterranean spot with Moroccan and Tunisian influences, a Spanish tapas bar with flamenco on weekends, and the kind of neighborhood burger joint that becomes a weekly habit. No chains, no pretension, just genuinely good food within walking distance of each other.

Axia Taverna
Axia Taverna has been Tenafly’s fine-dining anchor since 2006, and it has only gotten better with age. The Parlamis family opened the restaurant with a vision of contemporary Greek cuisine: small plates, crudos, and big plates in a sleek, modern setting that feels more Manhattan than suburb. Executive Chef Alex Gorant leads the kitchen, and the wine list is curated by a sommelier with a focus on Greek selections you will not find anywhere else in Bergen County.
The restaurant has earned three-star reviews from the Bergen Record and Crain’s New York, plus coverage from the New York Times and Zagat. With a 4.8 rating on OpenTable and over 220 Yelp reviews, the consistency speaks for itself.
Why locals love it: twenty years in and still the best Greek restaurant in Bergen County. The meze alone is worth the reservation, and the wine program is genuinely special.
Sayola
For a proper night out, Sayola is Tenafly’s Spanish tapas destination. The menu is built for sharing: garlicky gambas al ajillo, patatas bravas, jamon, and paella brought to a table meant to linger over. On weekends the room comes alive with live flamenco, which turns a good dinner into an occasion.
It is the kind of place that rewards a group and a little time. Order broadly, let the plates keep coming, and settle in.
Why locals love it: genuine Spanish tapas with real atmosphere, flamenco nights included.
Veda
Veda brings contemporary Indian cuisine to Jay Street in downtown Tenafly, and it has become one of the borough’s most popular BYOBs. Open seven days a week, the menu covers the classics, Chicken Tikka Masala, Saag Paneer, Dal Makhni, but with a level of craft and consistency that sets it apart from the average Indian restaurant.
With over 140 Yelp reviews, the feedback is remarkably consistent: diverse flavors, generous portions, and the BYOB format means you can bring a bottle of wine and keep the bill reasonable. They also offer delivery and takeout, plus a solid selection of vegan and vegetarian options.
Why locals love it: consistently outstanding Indian food with BYOB savings. It is the answer to “where should we order from tonight?” at least once a week.
Tavlin
Tavlin, which means “spice” in Hebrew, is a kosher Mediterranean BYOB on West Railroad Avenue that draws from Israeli, Moroccan, Tunisian, Greek, and Spanish influences. Formerly operating as Hamsa, the restaurant rebranded under new ownership and has built a loyal following for its fresh hummus, shawarma, and tableside service.
It is one of the few kosher fine-dining options in Bergen County that does not feel like a compromise. The menu is creative, the atmosphere is welcoming, and the kosher wine BYOB format keeps things accessible. It is open for lunch and dinner most days, closed Fridays, and back Saturday evenings after sundown.
Why locals love it: kosher Mediterranean with real ambition. The tableside service adds a personal touch, and the Moroccan-Tunisian influences make the menu genuinely interesting.
Mel’s Butcher Box
Every great downtown needs a great burger spot, and Mel’s Butcher Box is Tenafly’s. This casual, family-friendly spot on West Railroad Avenue specializes in quality burgers, sandwiches, salads, and milkshakes, straightforward food done right with good ingredients.
It is the kind of place where you stop in after a hike at the Nature Center or grab a quick dinner when nobody feels like cooking. They also handle catering for local events. With over 70 Yelp reviews and a loyal local following, Mel’s has quietly become one of Tenafly’s most reliable go-to spots.
Why locals love it: no pretension, just excellent burgers and shakes in a neighborhood setting. The kids love it, the parents love it, and it never disappoints.
